History of our Parish
We, Our Lady of the Nativity and St Paul Syro Malabar Catholic Church, Portsmouth,
whole heartedly welcome you to Portsmouth Syro Malabar Catholic Community. All
are invited to join in the celebration of the Holy Qurbana (Eucharist) and be part of
the prayer experiences of the community.
The Syro-Malabar Church was known as the Church of the St. Thomas Christians until the 18th century because it was founded by St Thomas, one of the apostles of Jesus Christ. St. Thomas came to India in 52 A.D and died in 72 AD as a Martyr in a place called Mylapore near the present town of Chennai (Madras). His tomb is venerated there.
The Catholic Church is the communion of 24 individual or sui juris Churches. There is one Latin Church (Western Rite) and there are 23 Oriental (Eastern Rite) Churches. All these Churches are in full communion with the Church of Rome, forming the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. The Syro-Malabar Church is one of the 24 sui juris Oriental Churches in Catholic Communion with its own particular characteristics expressed in worship, spirituality, theology and disciplinary laws. The Syro-Malabar Church is the largest Eastern Catholic Church by number of faithful, with around 5 million vibrant members all around the world.

Our Church and its History:
We belong to Syro-Malabar Church. The Syro-Malabar Church is an Apostolic Church which traces its origin to the Apostolate of St. Thomas who, according to the tradition, landed at Malabar Coast (Currently known as Kerala, south coast of India) in 52 AD and founded seven Christian communities.
